It's time to enjoy teaching music.
Hello, I'm Sue. I'm here to help you love teaching music as a primary school subject, even if you've never picked up an instrument, or are convinced you can't sing a note (who told you that? It's not true!)
I’ve spent over forty years playing, teaching, and examining music across the UK and internationally. Along the way, I’ve seen first-hand how daunting, and even upsetting, it can be for excellent primary school teachers with little or no musical background to suddenly be handed a music scheme of work and expected to “just get on with it.”
I believe that teachers flourish when they have the subject knowledge and understanding they need to plan with ease and deliver with real enjoyment. That’s exactly why I created Stay Calm, Teach Music, launching in 2026, to give you:
- easy-to-access, concise, training resources to provide the subject knowledge KS1/2 teachers need to teach any music scheme of work as confidently as other subjects
- teaching resources with step-by-step, plain English instructions and explanations, to boost your knowledge and effortlessly enhance any scheme of work
A flourishing teacher is good for everyone. I'm really glad that you're here.
"What a difference!"
When I first started teaching, our school had a new and very expensive bought-in music scheme but the musical jargon was like a foreign language - I used to have to take it home and ask a friend to try and explain it. I would then try to teach it. It wasn't great. Luckily I was able to benefit from some intensive training from Sue and found that getting a really good grasp of the basic principles was enough for me to understand the scheme, realise what I was looking out for in the children and, for the first time, be able to respond to their needs myself and teach well.
I started to really love teaching music and became confident enough to lead school choirs, including taking children to competitions. I also now sing in a choir myself - but that's another story!
